At the end of October 2021, work on the construction of a child-friendly water play area on the Grote Markt in Breda (NL) started. The work will last until mid-December.
A water play area will be built on the Grote Markt in Breda, in front of the town hall’s steps. This central location in the city center of Breda is already a place where residents of Breda and visitors to the city meet. By adding this water play area, this can be further increased by being able to play with water as well. Children can play with the water playground while the parents are having a drink at one of the outside tables of the various cafes on the Grote Markt: an extra incentive for the catering industry on the Grote Markt. The location is in the heart of Breda, the perfect place to express the symbol of the city in the form of water.
Research shows that the Grote Markt is one of the warmer places in the city. Experience also shows that the city center is not attractive on very hot days. An ideal place to let residents and visitors find refreshment through the use of a water play area
In order to make the city center more attractive and climate-robust in hot weather, there must be more places where small and ‘big’ children can play with water. There is now one water play facility in the city center on Kasteelplein, which is widely used. An extra reason to build the water play facility on the Grote Markt.
The plans for the water play area have been coordinated with local residents and entrepreneurs at various times.
The water playground on the Grote Markt is being constructed as part of the European Cool Towns project.
